The issue of gender, as a language variable, has been the focus of study for many years. Knowing about differences between male and female in language use could help teachers and syllabus designers develop better instructions and learning materials for learners. However, it seems that this crucial variable has not gained much attention in the realm of foreign language research, especially in writing skill. Since writing skill in foreign language and especially in academic setting is of significance, much more attention should be paid to the issue of gender. In addition, considering cultural differences between native and foreign language, it can be found that this variable plays a significant role in learning a foreign language. Given the importance of gender in language learning and teaching, this book tries to demonstrate the differences between EFL student’s writing and teachers’ perceptions of male and female writing. The present book provides valuable information for methodologists, syllabus designers, material developers, teachers and learners.
Errors in second language writing, has been a topic of research for some time now with studies done to establish how to reduce them in student writing. Many of these research studies have been done in the United States of America and Asia, but little attention has been given to the issue of error reduction in the African ESL context. Besides, the few studies that have been done on writing concentrated on identifying and categorizing the errors. This study was therefore aimed at making a practical attempt at dealing with errors, using an action research design. The study was conducted in a Form Three classroom in a secondary school in Western Kenya, using a qualitative approach. Data was collected from interviews, observations and document analysis. The findings show that even in an ESL context, if students are enabled, they can identify errors in the composition of a peer and attempt corrections by consulting a dictionary, the teacher or a peer. The study also established that students are able to correct errors only as far as their linguistic competence can allow. This has implications for the teacher of writing.
The Primary objective in writing this book is to provide the readers the insight into structures and processes that Operations Research com offer and the enormous practical utility at its various techniques. The book treats the most important and practically relevant aspects of statistics for psychology, behavioural and social sciences, ranging from processes of data presentation, various measures of central tendency, dispersion, probability, hypothesis testing, parametric and non-parametric tests, interpretation of results, and research report writing and each chapter ending with review questions. Students, instructors, researchers and scholars will find this book very useful.
This book shed some light on how two approaches to writing assessment: direct formats, which require candidates to compose a piece of writing, and indirect formats, which do not necessarily require any text generation. The study also looks at another type of writing assessment in between these two paradigms, called semi-direct, where the text production is more controlled than the direct assessment. The investigation of these assessment approaches is focused on three areas. First, it looks at whether indirect formats, represented here by an editing task, relates to the direct formats, represented here by an essay task, letter and summary writing tasks (as semi-direct formats), in respect of predicting someone's writing ability. Then it looks at whether students' total scores, as well as, their subscores in grammar, spelling, punctuation will vary or not. Similarly, it looks at their content scores in the letter and the summary task.

There are different approaches for teaching and assessing writing. Lately, the researchers began to consider the process-oriented approach to writing. According to this approach, writing is a generative process. It focuses on the writer and the process or the strategies involved in writing. In this study, the author has attempted to consider the using of meta-discourse markers in process writing oriented-approach classes. This study surveyed to find whether the process writing instruction can be appropriate for using meta-discourse features or the performance of product writing. The results of statistical analysis revealed that the explicit instruction of process writing approach in EFL courses is quite successful for improving application of meta-discourse features in learners’ writing ability.

‘Guided writing activities’ have been used by many ESL teachers to solve problems in writing instruction but they are recognised by a few EFL teachers. This book thus realises the importance of such activities due to a wide range of guidance via linguistic components of writing tasks and teachers' help. It aims to evaluate the effectiveness of using guided writing activities in narrative writing, namely telling a story through a series of pictures and pen-friend letter tasks in an EFL classroom in Thailand. It appears that the learners in the experimental classroom succeeded in learning and practising such two guided writing tasks. Moreover, the teachers accepted guided writing activities as part of lessons in Fundamental English course due to the suitability to the learners’ needs, level, and linguistic and communicative competepence, as well as cultural norm and social standards of English usage in Thailand. Overall, this book represents the implementation of the guided writing approach, so it will be useful for many other ESL/EFL teachers and scholars who wish to use or design effective materials for writing classroom and for learners who want to improve their written English.
One of the main problem students’ faces during their research work is how to select and carry on the problem of investigation. Numerous times the students select a topic for their research, but when they proceed, they face big issues and most of them left their research saying that it is hard to complete. In every field of education in Pakistan generally and in the field of sports sciences and physical education particularly, the culture of research is not established as compared to developed and even in the developing countries. There are many books concerned with research methods and theories. This is one of them. This qualitative study explores the impact of a proposed Hybrid Dynamic Assessment (HDA) model on the essay writing of English Language Learners (ELL). The proposed model is rooted in Vygotsky’s Sociocultural Theory (SCT) concept of Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). The participants of the study included six ELL and their two writing teachers within the English Language Institute (ELI) at the American University in Cairo (AUC), Egypt. Using pre- and post-tests, observations, and interviews, the study explored three main research questions which are: (1) how is the HDA model applied?, (2) what is the impact of the HDA model on the writing of the six ELL?, and (3) how do participants evaluate the HDA model? Findings of the study show that a number of different mediation strategies were used during the application of the HDA model including the use of elicitation, explanation, correction, translation, hinting, use of physical tools, and use of non-verbal cues. The mediator was found to perform a number of procedural roles including beginning the mediation session, negotiating area of focus, using appropriate mediation strategies, summing up the session, and grading students’ writin
