There are different approaches for teaching and assessing writing. Lately, the researchers began to consider the process-oriented approach to writing. According to this approach, writing is a generative process. It focuses on the writer and the process or the strategies involved in writing. In this study, the author has attempted to consider the using of meta-discourse markers in process writing oriented-approach classes. This study surveyed to find whether the process writing instruction can be appropriate for using meta-discourse features or the performance of product writing. The results of statistical analysis revealed that the explicit instruction of process writing approach in EFL courses is quite successful for improving application of meta-discourse features in learners’ writing ability.

Self-assessments are an educational tool that provides students with a resource to help them understand their strengths and areas for growth in writing. The purpose of this action research project was to determine if utilizing self-assessments with the use of a co-created rubric improved writing quality and attitude in grade two students. Twenty students participated in the research project, which took place in a grade two classroom within a large metropolitan school division located in southern Alberta. At the end of the action research project the number of students who felt they were poor writers decreased. The majority of the students involved with this research project gained a more positive view of themselves as writers. In regards to improving writing quality, the data showed a positive correlation between the use of rubrics for self-assessment and improvement in both the quality of writing and in students’ attitudes toward writing. The largest growth area was specific to the content of the writing.

Western managers with Chinese staff often encounter misunderstandings and communication problems in their day-to-day business environment. This thesis aims to investigate the challenges Western managers face and to give some hand-on advice on how to overcome these challenges. This thesis has tackled this complex topic with a multi-angle approach. Initially information about the challenges among management in Shanghai was collected through a survey. Secondly, a separate survey followed among Chinese staff working for Western managers in order to create a complete picture of the challenges. These findings are then analyzed in a theoretical context, with the help of a broad selection of sources explaining the Chinese cultural and behavioural patterns. Combining expert interviews with literature and own experiences, the thesis concludes with improvement suggestions and advice for the reader. The author's own experience of living and working in China enhances the thesis with a very practical touch through illuminating examples and creates a unique guide to overcoming cultural differences in a Chinese business environment.
