The output of the conceptual database design may be a relational database, universal relational database, binary relational database, object database or object relational database. There are also a number of different ways to achieve these different database solutions. The performance of the database in terms of storage and query processing is greatly influenced by the database design strategies or approaches. It is difficult to find a single strategy to achieve good performance in all types of the database applications. This thesis presents a number of approaches for the design of relational and object-relational databases. We have designed a number of test cases to evaluate the performance of the design approaches and to evaluate the performance of the database. On the basis of different data models, analytical evaluation is performed for all the design approaches. Experimental evaluation for all different approaches has been performed by using both synthetic and real data sets with different characteristics. The main components that we have considered for different approaches are denormalization, nested relations and object orientation.

This introduces problems because database physical design and storage configuration are closely related tasks, and the separation makes it more difficult to achieve a good end-to-end design. For instance, the performance of a database system depends strongly on the storage layout of database objects, such as tables and indexes, and the separation makes it hard to design a storage layout that is tuned to the I/O workload generated by the database system. In this book we analyze this problem and attempt to close the information gap between database and storage tiers by addressing the problem of predicting the storage (I/O) workload that will be generated by a database management system. We then present a storage layout optimization methodology, which leverages such workload information to generate an optimized layout for a given set of database objects.

This is a dissertation work that has used a Case study of Eastern Africa (EA) EIA Expertise Database (www.ira-eaaia.org) at the Institute of Resource Assessment, University of Dar es salaam to evaluate major role of database in promoting regional EIA practice. That was due to importance of EIA that is now considered globally to be among major environmental management tools used for guiding environmental protection as well as providing means for achieving sustainable developments. Generally, the study assessed relevance and adequacy of EIA information in the EA EIA Expertise database system as well as its role in promoting EIA practice in the region; achievement level in performing database work; management approach planned and practiced in implementing database work, and respondent's opinions for enabling sustainability and better performance of EIA database work. Research methodology used questionnaires, interviews and review of literatures. Results show that EIA database framework was effectively designed to input EIA information but it lacks sufficient data for undertaking EIA studies effectively. More information is thus needed in the EIA database.

In the first solution, a schema compression methodology is proposed, and in other solution, a semantic modeling methodology for databases is suggested. In this regard, this work provides a framework for integrated heterogeneous database using schema matching as an approach, which can be used to reconcile heterogeneous database systems and further enhance automatic interoperability among database systems.The interoperability between databases will be supported without modifying the database or loosing their autonomy.

A multi database consists of a collection of autonomous local databases. Systems used to manage multi databases are called multi database systems (MDBSs). In such a system global transactions are executed under the control of the MDBS. Independently local transactions are submitted directly to a local Database system (LDBS) by local applications. An Multi Database System should provide a mechanism to globally manage transactions. However global transactions are long- live and involve operation on multiple and autonomous local databases. Moreover MDBSs do not have any information about the existence and execution order of local transactions. The aim of this research is to propose a design that integrates three Heterogeneous multi databases with the same model relational but different software environments.
The main intention of this research is to examine the legal protection of database. For that reason, the relevant laws are investigated with the aim of identifying the strengths and weaknesses in them as well as to propose the appropriate legal protection. The pertinent laws on this issue are divided into two types of protection, i.e., intellectual property legal regime and other possible legal protection. The former comprises copyright law and ‘sui generis’ database right. The latter analyzes other established laws that are applicable to safeguard the interest of database producer. Those laws are common law actionable torts, contract law and Islamic legal principles. The conclusion of this thesis proposes on the appropriate ways of remedying the weaknesses in the statutory provisions and examines the possibilities of invoking other relevant laws in protecting database in Malaysia.
