This publication contains six articles on qualitative research, primarily in the areas of social science, business and management, and human resource development (HRD). In recent times, it would appear that qualitative research has gradually started to become more popular than quantitative research in these areas of research. Having said this, however, the papers are not entirely restricted to qualitative research. The second paper, for example, refers to ‘mixed methods’ research, which incorporates both qualitative and quantitative research, while the final paper concerns research on ‘social capital’. The editors and authors of the papers are all academics or doctoral candidates/intending academics. This volume should be of particular interest to theses examiners, doctoral supervisors, and students, particularly those interested in qualitative research in these areas.

This book is a teacher in itself, intended to guide students of tertiary institutions including researchers on one easy way to write papers for submission to a journal. The language used is kept as simple as possible for easy understanding. The book gave a general background to writing scientific research papers, what to consider before starting to write a scientific paper, how to attract other readers to your work and it enables the reader to know the qualities the editors and referees will be looking for in a paper as part of its consideration for publication. It takes each of the main parts of a research paper and looks at what usually goes into them with practical examples. Writing research papers is too wide a field to be able to cover every aspect in one small book. Other books deal in greater detail with other areas of scientific writing especially its technical details. It is not meant to be complete but as a basic introduction. I hope that the book will assist many scientists as they undertake the difficult task of writing their papers for submission to International Scientific Journals. I am delighted to publish this book and make it available to the developing world.

Surgical Site Infection (SSI) remains one of the most important problems in post operative complication, contributing approximately 38% of all cases. There is no doubt that SSIs substantially contribute to prolongation of hospital stay and increase costs. However, it has been difficult to establish the extent SSI contributes to attributable mortality. Research has found that the likelihood of death for patients with SSI is twice that for patients without Surgical Site Infection. This book gives a fresh look on the incidence of postoperative wound infections among the patients undergoing surgical procedure, risk factors that predispose to postoperative wound infections and characterize pathogens associated with Surgical Site Infections at a tertiary hospital in Africa. It brings with it the sense of infection control in health care setup, which forms a basis of antibiotic stewardship.

In this research, using historic studies, historic maps, period photographs, and other documentary resources, the author creates a historic Geographic Information System to connect attributes of the heritage of Chinese pioneers in a mining camp with spatial data of the historic site, and uses it as an approach to document, visualize and interpret a complex multidimensional heritage site that lacks historic remains. The result of the research is a rich computerized resource of information of an integrated cultural heritage site documented from historic maps, historic photographs, historic newspaper articles, historic records, and other resources. Based on different research objectives, these documented information aspects could be used separately or together to interpret and visualize the multifaceted spatial history of the Chinese in Virginia City, Montana.
Research is often conducted using the hourglass model structure of research. The hourglass model starts with a broad spectrum for research, focusing in on the required information through the method of the project (like the neck of the hourglass), then expands the research in the form of discussion and results. The major steps in conducting research are: 1.Identification of research problem 2.Literature review 3.Specifying the purpose of research 4.Determine specific research questions or 5.hypotheses 6.Data collection 7.Analyzing and interpreting the data 8.Reporting and evaluating research

Peat extraction occurs right across northern Europe and North America. Afforestation has been considered one of the most feasible after-use alternatives for the degraded habitats that are ‘cutaway peatlands'. In Ireland, research was initiated to generate optimal practices that represent the most appropriate methods (species, seedling characteristics and management operations) for the successful afforestation of industrial cutaway peatlands and the creation of new sustainable forests, compatible with environmental imperatives. This research established that with good planning and the application of site- specific establishment procedures, satisfactory results could be obtained, using intensive site evaluation procedures. While Norway spruce may be the most suitable commercial forest species, a range of other conifer and broadleaved species can be established successfully. The variation in site conditions encountered in any given site means that, not one, but several species might flourish within a given area, thus enhancing the sustainability of these new forests. This research should help students, researchers as well as foresters and land managers.
“… this is a very good and thoroughly written PhD thesis which will represent another important corner stone for the University of Otago. I do recommend that this excellent work will be placed on the Divisional List of exceptional PhD theses.” TOMAS ALBREKTSSON, Professor in Department of Biomaterial Research, The Sahlgrenska Academy at Goteborg University, Goteborg, Sweden. “The work that has been performed is immense. Present era has seen emergence of new subjects and their development at a very fast pace. An interdependency of these subjects, their scope and impact is however expanding very fast. It is becoming increasingly difficult to measure the different aspects of research output, especially in case of application oriented, interdisciplinary subjects.Indicators based on research papers published in the international scientific journal literature are particularly useful for providing internationally comparable data on an academic institution’s scientific performance. These so called ‘bibliometric’ indicators can be used to establish an institution’s share in the volume of international research papers within a particular scientific discipline, its International scientific ‘impact’ in terms of references in the worldwide scientific literature to these papers, or the national and international scientific collaboration in terms of co-authored research publications. The aim of this study is to analyse quantitatively the literature contributed by the faculty at Jamia Millia Islamia.
