Multilingualism is becoming a crucial issue in our society, especially in the European context. Furthermore, research shows that there is a tendency towards raising children with more than one language (Claire 2012). This brings many new aspects to education, theoretical concepts and approaches to multilingualism. Therefore, (multi-)linguists try to illuminate multilingualism from different points of view and try to explore and explain different paths of language development academically. The theoretical part of this thesis will present theories of multilingualism and language complexity. This theoretical background provides the basis on which the author of this thesis created suggestions on how to illustrate and visualise language complexity. The main basis for the created illustrations will be the Dynamic Model of Multilingualism by Herdina and Jessner (2002). Furthermore, theoretical information concerning language monitoring and possibilities to illustrate language monitoring will be presented. Finally, the last part of this thesis will show that it is possible to teach multilingual skills at school.
Michael Young is convinced his brilliant history thesis will win him a doctorate, a pleasant academic post, a venerable academic publisher and his beloved girlfriend Jane. A historian should know better than to imagine that he can predict the future.
Isamay's unusual name comes from her two very different grandmothers, Isa and May, who were both present at her birth and who have both formed and influenced her whole life in very particular ways. Now almost thirty, Isamay is trying to write a thesis about grandmothers in history but is instead constantly ambushed by the startling secrets her own family has been keeping. When disturbing truths are revealed that force Isamay to examine her own certainties, will her grandmothers be able to build a bridge across the generations?
The competent use of English is believed to be a necessary personal and professional skill for employees to make a prosperous and successful career in a modern, fast-paced business world. The initial assumption of this thesis is that the lack of English as skill in a multinational work environment might result in communication issues. These shortcomings may affect business operations, might lead to misunderstandings and, at worst, to business loss. Corporate language management seems to be neglected due to the lack of awareness of the significance of language competences. This thesis attempts to address the major issues in regards to the multiple demands on the work force of today’s labour market. A proposal for competent use of English to improve communication in multinational companies is tested by conducting interviews with employees and managers of multinational companies in Luxembourg.
The British Museum is Falling Down is a brilliant comic satire of academia, religion and human entanglements. First published in 1965, it tells the story of hapless, scooter-riding young research student Adam Appleby, who is trying to write his thesis but is constantly distracted - not least by the fact that, as Catholics in the 1960s, he and his wife must rely on 'Vatican roulette' to avoid a fourth child.
