Collins Writing for IELTS has been specially created for learners of English who plan to take the Academic IELTS exam to demonstrate that they have the required ability to communicate effectively in English at university. What is IELTS? The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is sat by over 1.4 million candidates around the world every year. It is the most common test used by universities for foreign students to prove their language level. IELTS is also increasingly used for immigration purposes, with Australia, New Zealand and Canada all requiring visa applicants whose first language is not English to submit an IELTS grade. The system tests candidates' Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking in four separate papers. Usually, students must gain a good mark in all four skills in order to gain entry to the course, job, or country of their choice. For this reason, candidates will often sit the exam numerous times to secure the score that they need. There are two IELTS Writing papers: General and Academic. Collins Writing for IELTS concentrates on the Academic paper.

They seem to be a bit surprised… Hmmm, maybe they’re not quite ready? (The drawing’s a bit messy, too. It looks like this illustrator has some more work to do.) Let’s read on and see. Uh-oh – it seems the characters don’t actually know what to DO! Hang on … there’s not even a STORY because – guess what?! – this book isn’t FINISHED! But while you're here (and because you probably DO want a story, right?) they're going to try and find one for you. And they might just need the help of a certain author...
Writing a critical literature review is sometimes the greatest difficulty encountered by graduate students in the process of writing graduate theses or dissertations. Based on analysis of writing samples and in-depth interview data, this study investigated five Chinese graduate students’ experiences with writing a literature review at a medium-sized university in Canada. These students, from five subject areas, held different perceptions of a literature review, and saw the writing challenges they encountered mainly as linguistic problems, especially regarding vocabulary and accuracy at the sentence level. The strategies they used in the composing process were diverse, with different individuals relying on them to different degrees. Findings from this study suggest that Chinese graduate students need assistance to adjust to the new academic environment and writing genre expectations. This book will help faculty members to better understand ESL graduate students' struggle with writing a literature review in English for academic purposes, and might also assist universities in designing suitable language courses based on ESL students’ needs.

The purpose of this book is to investigate the variation in the use of English writing strategies due to gender at Jordanian public schools. It focuses on examining the variation among eleventh graders enrolled in the scientific stream. Data necessary for the purpose of the study were elicited from a sample of 100 male and female students by a questionnaire, writing tasks, think-aloud protocol, and interviews. The data analysis has shown that there was a clear variation between the two genders in the use of socioaffecetive strategies which were used by females more than males and in the use of metacognitive strategies in which males surpassed females in the use of planning, selective attention, and directed attention strategies.
