The present work is the result of my natural and eternal inquietude in relation to issues concerning Black people’s stories and on Black people’s histories, which were not written, heard, spoken and/or revealed. Being a black woman made me think about the absence and/or erasure of Black heroes as well as of Black heroines of the pages of Literature and of History books. Yet, in 2010, I encountered the “treasure”: I found Black people talking about Black issues in all kinds of interesting texts: in Literature, in History, in articles. Therefore, bearing in mind my intention to bring a kind of literature produced by Black people, mainly Black women writers, as well as the searching for writers who made use of literature as a hopeful space, interweaving fiction and fact, history and literature, providing us with alternative discourses, I decided on two influential writers, the African Americans, Frances E. W. Harper and Pauline E. Hopkins. Harper and Hopkins were some of the female voices who joined the chorus of those advocating dignity, equality, respect and uplift for African Americans, mainly for African American Women.

Children's literature criticism comprises both generalists' discussions of the relationship between children's literature and literary theory as well as a literary analysis of specific work or works of literature. But practical children’s literary criticism tends to limit its scope in content analysis giving emphasis for the psychological and educational merits of the literature. This made children literature an under studied young genre in the world of literary scholarship. This is also a reality in Ethiopian Children’s Literature. Even if the history of writing for children in the country can be traced back to the time where writing in the main stream literature began no serious literary criticism is undergone in the area and most books for children are limited to sketchy preschool story books.

What is the position of translated literature in the literary system of target language? Is there a possibility that translated literature can go from the periphery to the center? According to Even-Zohar (Zohar, 1978), translated literature may go from the periphery to the center under three conditions : when a polysystem has not yet been crystallized, that is to say, when a literature is “young” or in the process of being established; when a literature is either “peripheral” (within a large group of correlated literatures) or “weak” or both; when there are turning points, crises, or literary vacuums in a literature. Among these conditions, the third one conforms to the historical facts of China during the May 4th span when there was a Literary Revolution to oppose the old literature and set up new modern literature. And then can the historical facts be used to verify the third hypothesis? If it is true, then how much influence of translated literature can be exerted on the language, literature, culture, and even society of target language? The author of this book attempts to answer these questions in her research.
The Work of Literature presents a fresh approach to the question of the value of literature, posing and responding to questions about the way we read and write about literature, its value to individuals and society, how it is best approached by readers and critics, and how it retains its power to give pleasure over decades and centuries.
