A social networking site is an on-line service that attracts a society of subscribers and provides such users with a multiplicity of tools for distributing personal data and creating subscribers-generated content directed to a given user’s interest and personal life. Operators of online social networks are gradually giving out potentially sensitive information about users and their relationships with advertisers, application developers, and data-mining researchers. Some criminals too uses information gathered through membership profile in social networks to break people's Personal Identification Numbers, e-mail accounts and passwords. In this book, we analysed how private information can easily be made public in such sites. The book also looked at how it can be used to distort national security, how it became the new weapon of mass mobilisation and also how social networks have became the rallying forces for revolutions and social justice. At the end recommendations and countermeasures were made on how to safe guard subscribers’ personal data.
‘Social security communities’ is a hypothetical term used in the book to refer to communities that rely mainly on social grants payouts to meet their day to day basic needs. The claim is that households in ‘social security communities’ access food mainly through the market. The demographics of such communities have high dependancy ratios. These communities are predominant in former homeland areas characterised of poverty and underdevelopement. On the contrary households in ‘agrarian communities’ are actively influencing their food production and food access systems with direct practice of crop and animal husbandry. The ‘social security communities’ are welfare dependent such that in a situation where the state fails to deliver of the social welfare packages these communities are left with no means to cope. What is social security? Social security is informed of the human rights logic. It includes two formations which are social insurance (contributory oriented) and social assistance (welfare oriented). Social assistance in form of social grants (welfare oriented) is a critical feature of social policy aimed at poverty alleviation.
This book is a result of a Master of Art in Sociology that intends to explore the means by which majority of Tanzanians are excluded from the ambit of the existing social security provisioning. Qualitative and quantitative research findings revealed that exclusion of the majority from the ambit of the existing social security schemes is principally caused by restrictive legislation which defines the personal scope of coverage for each of the social security schemes in Tanzania, also critical shortage of knowledge on social security prompts the current state of affairs, the copying strategies against social and income risks of the excluded majority are explained. The study concludes that majority (especially informal sector workers) are marginalized by the existing social security schemes and left into the hands of informal and traditional social security which are not adequate to uplift them from the miserable lives they are in, hence subjected to abject poverty. Specialized schemes for the excluded majority are recommended by the study due to the fact that they are not homogenous and neither are their needs and priorities. This book is recommended to academics and policy makers.
Book DescriptionThis book has two aims. First, to consider how risk, crisis and security, may be linked in an organisational context. Second, to review the role of, simulation and gaming in responding to these phenomena. Historically, risk has been an established concept of academic interest for some time in both the pure and social sciences. Risk however, remains a subject of intense social and political controversy. How we manage risk appears to dominate every debate from providing social services suchas health, transport and public safety to the regulation of corporate activity. Debates about the theory and practice of security management are less developed. This book will inform the debate by considering the relationships between risk and security. Includes case studies such as the Kings Cross underground disaster, September 11, Hong Kong race track fire, Arthur Anderson and London ambulance computer failure

No, hang on, let's make this interesting. Between zero and infinity. Even if you stick to the whole numbers, there are a lot to choose from - an infinite number in fact. Throw in decimal fractions and infinity suddenly gets an awful lot bigger (is that even possible?) And then there are the negative numbers, the imaginary numbers, the irrational numbers like pi which never end. It literally never ends. The world of numbers is indeed strange and beautiful. Among its inhabitants are some really notable characters - pi, e, the "imaginary" number i and the famous golden ratio to name just a few. Prime numbers occupy a special status. Zero is very odd indeed: is it a number, or isn't it?How Numbers Work takes a tour of this mind-blowing but beautiful realm of numbers and the mathematical rules that connect them. Not only that, but take a crash course on the biggest unsolved problems that keep mathematicians up at night, find out about the strange and unexpected ways mathematics influences our everyday lives, and discover the incredible connection between numbers and reality itself.

In this collection of essays, Theda Skocpol, author of the award-winning States and Social Revolutions (CUP, 1979), updates her arguments about social revolutions. How are we to understand recent revolutionary upheavals in countries across the globe? Why have social revolutions happened in some countries, but not in others that seem similar? Skocpol shows how she and other scholars have used ideas about states and societies to identify the particular types of regimes that are susceptible to the growth of revolutionary movements and vulnerable to transfers of state power to revolutionary challengers.

Countries emerging from conflict situations are almost always plagued by social upheaval, damaged infrastructure, reduced productive capacity, severe revenue shortfalls, seriously weakened human resources and greatly diminished security. The challenges are daunting as post-conflict governments strive to ensure peace and security, foster social reconciliation and promote development. Yet recovery is possible if the political leadership and public administration can earn the trust of the people, effectively provide services to all and operate in an efficient, effective, transparent and accountable way. This book is about how countries can rebuild the foundations and establish the conditions for self-sustaining, inclusive socio-economic development in the immediate aftermath of violent conflict. The book emphasizes that because post-conflict situations are heterogeneous, there are no ‘one size fits all’ solutions to governance challenges. In each country, political leadership and public administration reforms should be tailored to local needs.

Examining several contemporary environmental controversies—including water consumption, food safety, and air pollution—this guide illustrates how a critical perspective can aid in understanding such complex social, economic, and political issues. Key concepts in environmental social science are introduced to clarify controversies and address broader questions such as How do our consumption decisions affect ecosystems? Can we rely on governments to maintain environmental well being? Do those living in rural areas see the environment differently from urban dwellers? and Is sustainability possible? The discussion both examines the disputes and demonstrates that ecological problems and their solutions are as much social and political as they are scientific. Activism resources at the end of each chapter are included as are suggestions on ways to reduce individual ecological footprints.
Why are different varieties of the Japanese language used differently in social interaction, and how are they perceived? How do honorifics operate to express diverse affective stances, such as politeness? Why have issues of gendered speech been so central in public discourse, and how are they reflected and refracted in language use as social practice? This book examines Japanese sociolinguistic phenomena from a fascinating new perspective, focusing on the historical construction of language norms and its relationship to actual language use in contemporary Japan. This socio-historically sensitive account stresses the different choices which have shaped Japanese and Western sociolinguistics and how varieties of Japanese, honorifics and politeness, and gendered language have emerged in response to the socio-political landscape in which a modernizing Japan found itself.

Social dilemmas are conflicts between individual rationality and general welfare. The Literature explains how to evaluate effectiveness of cooperation based on trust mechanism in small-scale social dilemmas, but how to evaluate effectiveness of cooperation mechanisms in large-scale situations remain unknown until this book. The authors designed a construct to test cooperation mechanisms used to promote in large-scale social dilemmas that involve resource depletion. The proposed construct integrates cooperation mechanisms like trust, perception of damage and cooperation as norm. Results suggest that the designed artifact explains how mechanisms promote cooperative behavior in large-scale social dilemmas that involve resource depletion. In these cases dynamic complexity affects cooperation. This book finally indicates how cooperation mechanisms can be effective to promote cooperation in the context of dynamic complexity in large-scale social resource situations.

This book critically analyzes the exclusionary nature of the national social security legislation which provides for the Constitutional right to social security. This is done with the intention of assessing the government’s efforts towards a more comprehensive social safety net. Firstly regional and international provision of the right is discussed to emphasize the importance of its realization in the Eastern Cape Province and nationally. The study evaluates the legal and administrative problems that hinder the people from accessing and fully realizing the right to social security. It further asses the legislative and administrative problems and causes thereof that have hindered the government in trying to make this right a living right. The exclusionary social security system is criticized on the basis that everyone is Constitutionally entitled to access social security if they can not provide for themselves. Some of the excluded people are the self-employed; unemployed and the poor. Remedies are then provided for the people to rely on when the state fails to act, or when it violates this fundamental human right to social security.
