Unlike any other book this teaches students how to generate their own ideas and develop them into original research projects. Using examples from all disciplines, it not only teaches students how to plan and research using all the qualitative and quantitative techniques and instruments, but also how to construct arguments and use evidence and language consistently. Throughout it emphasizes that writing is the most difficult form of thinking and dissertations are a test of our ability both to think and write clearly.

Within the framework of the Sixth I-ESA International Conference, supported by the INTEROP VLab (International Virtual Laboratory on Enterprise Interoperability, http://www.interop-vlab.eu), three workshops and a Doctoral Symposium have been organized in order to strengthen some key topics related to interoperability for enterprise applications and software. The workshops were selected to complement the conference topics, leaving more time to researchers for brainstorming and then coming up, at the end of the workshops, with new research directions for the future. The goal of the workshop “Standards – a Foundation for Interoperability” is to increase awareness and understanding of interoperability standards as a fundamental need. The workshop “Use of MDI/SOA Concepts in Industry” promotes the application of MDI (Model-Driven Interoperability) combined with SOA (Services Oriented Architecture) and the associated technology (BPM, Enterprise Modeling, ontology, mediation, model transformation, etc.) in industry. The workshop on “Dynamic Management across Interoperating Enterprises” investigates the need for enhancements to current business management systems and processes to address the needs of global trading across enterprises utilizing the new service-oriented Internet. Finally, the Doctoral Symposium has given the opportunity for students involved in the preparation of their PhDs in this emerging area to present and discuss their research issues and ideas with senior researchers.
Biomass incineration for the generation of heat and electricity has increased in recent years and this trend is expected to be continued. Ashes as inorganic residues from incineration contain nutrients, but also heavy metals and unburnt carbon. Bottom ashes with low levels of heavy metals are usually used as fertilizers in forests and on fields. Fly ashes are highly contaminated with heavy metals and must therefore be properly disposed of. In view of the rising amount of biomass ashes, this doctoral thesis analyzes different ways for the utilization of biomass ashes – especially heavy metal contaminated fly ashes. The following topics are part of the doctoral thesis: • Validation of the analytical method ICP-OES for determining the concentrations of Al, As, B, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, Pb, Sb, Sr, Ti, V, and Zn • Extraction experiments for the investigation of the mobility of heavy metals and nutrients • Experiments of the influence of fly ashes on plant growth • Air classification of fly ashes and investigation of the elemental concentrations in different grain sizes • Analysis of the possibility of using fly ashes as secondary material in the cement industry
This manuscript is based on the doctoral dissertation which Giacomo Bertini wrote as a PhD student within the Marie Curie project ATWARM (Advanced Technologies for Water Resource Management). The definition of the sorption memory of microbial biofilms is introduced and the use of biofilms and other materials is proposed in order to trace PAH pollutants in sewers. This book represents also a review of the most relevant studies on this subject.
