This study may challenge your thinking about a subject we often discuss but have very little agreement on. This study examines high school English assignments in traditional high schools grades 9-12 and one Early College.
Dr. Terry's research study, as chronicled in this work, investigated the effects of a formally organized 21st Century Learning Grant's after-school programs on the achievement levels of students in the third through fifth grades as measured by the South Carolina Palmetto Achievement Challenge Test. Findings from this investigation expand the knowledge base about after-school programming, and provide additional quantitative data regarding whether or not after-school programs do contribute to student success and increased achievement. These findings also add to the limited literature dealing with elementary after-school programs.
This book examines political detention in Ghana's history from the colonial period to 1972. The book opens in 1850 with the activities of British officials and the forms of dissent by the people of Gold Coast, describes how the colonial government used political detention to silence agitators for self government, and how the Nkrumah government and the later regimes, inherited that colonial legacy. Thus, the book takes into account the issue of political detention or what has been referred to as executive detention from three different regimes; the colonial period, the First Republic, and the first military regime.The author has explained the various events that led to the detention of people under the various regimes. The author also describes how the issue of national security has been used in some cases as a subterfuge or as a cover up in the detention of political opponents.
Preventive Detention and the Democratic State tracks the transformation of preventive detention from an emergency measure into an ordinary law enforcement tool in the democratic world. Historically, democracies used preventive detention only in the extraordinary circumstance in which the criminal justice system was impotent. They preferred criminal prosecution and its strict due process requirements to detaining people for a crime they may never commit. This book shows that major democracies have begun using detention as an insurance policy against dangerous people. In the process, they have embarked on a slippery slope that allows them to use preventive detention to bypass the criminal justice system. Already, detention has established a separate, inferior legal system for certain suspected criminals. Comparing preventive detention in India, England and the United States, the book brings to light its potentially dire consequences for the rule of law, due process rights and democratic principles based on the very real experiences of these countries.

A shortened assignment, as an accommodation, can help learning disabled students learn and demonstrate their knowledge. The purpose of this qualitative case study using grounded theory analysis was to explore the administration and implementation of shortened assignments for four learning disabled students and to describe the perceptions of co-teachers and parents of how shortened assignments benefit or hinder learning for these students within a co-teaching context at an urban middle school. Shortened assignments, when applied consistently and appropriately by general and special education teachers, can help learning disabled students in a variety of ways.

The hours after school: Young school-aged children’s care arrangements and activities is a PhD dissertation that investigated how young children’s care arrangements and participation in extra-curricular activities are associated with their behaviour. Part of this study included exploration of the different models of Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) and the support available to OSHC coordinators. The study involved principals, teachers, children, parents, OSHC coordinators and staff from seven schools. The findings revealed that children who spent time in the care of their parents had lower behaviour scores (better behaviour) than children who were in full-time non-parental care. Children who participated in extra-curricular activities also had lower behaviour scores than those children who did not participate in these activities. Models of OSHC that provide coordinators with extra levels of support are more likely to deliver quality care to children.

The purpose of this book was to explore views of teachers and parents regarding school violence in Turkey. For the study, sity participants ideas were gathered from three different schools. After a large literature review of school violence in the world, the book explained perspectives of teachers and parents on definitions of school violence, causes and level of school violence in Turkish schools and lastly the book points out girl-on-girl psychological violence in Turkish schools that no previous studies have focused on violence among Turkish females in Turkey.This book will be useful for school violence literature especially for researchers whose interest is school violence in Turkey.
