This new book offers a clear and accessible exposition of Hayden White's thought. In an engaging and wide-ranging analysis, Herman Paul discusses White's core ideas and traces the development of these ideas from the mid-1950s to the present. Starting with White's medievalist research and youthful fascination for French existentialism, Paul shows how White became increasingly convinced that historical writing is a moral activity. He goes on to argue that the critical concepts that have secured White's fame – trope, plot, discourse, figural realism – all stem from his desire to explicate the moral claims and perceptions underlying historical writing. White emerges as a passionate thinker, a restless rebel against scientism, and a defender of existentialist humanist values. This innovative introduction will appeal to students and scholars across the humanities, and help develop a critical understanding of an increasingly important thinker.
Melville’s Philosophies departs from a long tradition of critical assessments of Melville that dismissed his philosophical capacities as ingenious but muddled. Its contributors do not apply philosophy to Melville in order to detect just how much of it he knew or understood. To the contrary, they try to hear the philosophical arguments themselves—often very strange and quite radical—that Melville never stopped articulating and reformulating. What emerges is a Melville who is materialistically oriented in a radical way, a Melville who thinks about life forms not just in the context of contemporary sciences but also ontologically. Melville’s Philosophies recovers a Melville who is a thinker of great caliber, which means obliquely but dramatically reversing the way the critical tradition has characterized his ideas. Finally, as a result of the readings collected here, Melville emerges as a very relevant thinker for contemporary philosophical concerns, such as the materialist turn, climate change, and post-humanism.
Critical thinking is a crucial component of the process of preparing future nurses. Yet their preparation heavily relies on the potentials of the educators. It is therefore essential to ensure that the educators enjoy knowledge and skills that qualify them to promote critical thinking among students. This book examines the critical thinking experience of nurse educators working in Jordanian Universities. A survey questionnaire consisting three parts was used in this study; the California Critical thinking Skill Test (CCTST), the California Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory (CCTDI), and the experience survey (ES). The CCTST measured critical thinking skills and the ES asked the participants to rate their practice of critical thinking. The ES included a qualitative component that invited nurse educators to describe a situation, which illustrated their experience of critical thinking in practice. The CCTDI measured disposition towards critical thinking.
Critical Care Nursing is The nursing specialty that deals specifically with human responses to life-threatening problems. The scope of Critical Care Nursing practice is a dynamic process with 3 components:critically ill patients, critical care environment and critical care nurses.the critical care nurse is a registered practitioner who enhances the delivery of comprehensive patient centered care, for acutely ill patients who require complex interventions in a highly technical environment; bringing to the patient care team a unique combination of knowledge and skills
The present book reports on an empirical study aimed at investigating critical thinking ability among EFL students. Moreover, the effects of gender, major, and critical thinking-oriented instruction through a critical reading program were examined. A better understanding of EFL students’ critical thinking ability helps teachers improve the instruction of critical thinking and consequently students can benefit from it.
In this book, the author offers a critical assessment of the state of critical theory as expounded in the works of its most recent adherent - Jurgen Habermas. The author argues that under Habermas's stewardship, critical theory has taken a wrong turn, and this has left it conceptually ill-equipped to serve as a critical theory of contemporary society. The roots of this problem lie in Habermas's jettisoning the Hegelian and dialectical heritage of critical theory for one grounded in the moral philosophy of Kant. This is explained by what the author argues is a serious misreading of Hegel, associating dialectics with absolutist tendencies, or in the case of Adorno, with aporia and fatalism. The author proceeds to expose these misreadings, arguing that a return to Hegel is not only viable but necessary if we are to return the critical impulse to critical theory.

Scholars agree that applying critical thinking is a systematic way to solve problems. More often it is being used in both professional and personal settings; in classrooms, in clinical practices, in politics, in social issues and in relationships. Moreover, on a daily basis, we are infiltrated with information at the click of a button. Critical thinking can be applied to what we read, hear, see or communicate in order to know what to do. For decades, scholars have debated the definition of critical thinking as well as the application of critical thinking. Consequently, this book provides a comprehensive look at the definition of critical thinking and the application of critical thinking across disciplines. The book will be very useful to educators who are interested in learning critical thinking and teaching critical thinking to students. The book is also for students who want a competitive edge in critical thinking among their peers. Managers and trainers of employees can use critical thinking to find solutions to problems. Professionals in clinical practices, such as marriage & family therapists, licensed professional counselors, or social workers can also use this book.

Teaching methodology plays a very important role in language learning, and critical teaching, as a method which promotes learners’ cognitive ability, has been receiving an increasing attention from researchers in the last two decades. The focus of the present study is to investigate the effect of critical teaching on learners’ reading comprehension improvement in an EFL context. This study is adapting the infusion approach to the critical thinking theory. This approach is based on the integration of teaching critical thinking skills into the subject-specific classes (in this case English classes). The findings of the study suggest that critical teaching has a positive effect on both learners’ reading comprehension ability and their motivation. The findings are useful to both teachers and learners and could be implemented in teacher training courses, self-learning software, or in computer assisted language learning (CALL).
A valuable guide on creativity and critical thinking to improve reasoning and decision-making skills Critical thinking skills are essential in virtually any field of study or practice where individuals need to communicate ideas, make decisions, and analyze and solve problems. An Introduction to Critical Thinking and Creativity: Think More, Think Better outlines the necessary tools for readers to become critical as well as creative thinkers. By gaining a practical and solid foundation in the basic principles that underlie critical thinking and creativity, readers will become equipped to think in a more systematic, logical, and imaginative manner. Creativity is needed to generate new ideas to solve problems, and critical thinking evaluates and improves an idea. These concepts are uniquely introduced as a unified whole due to their dependence on each other. Each chapter introduces relevant theories in conjunction with real-life examples and findings from cognitive science and psychology to illustrate how the theories can be applied in numerous fields and careers. An emphasis on how theoretical principles of reasoning can be practical and useful in everyday life is featured, and special sections on presentation techniques, the analysis of meaning, decision-making, and reasoning about personal and moral values are also highlighted. All chapters conclude with a set of exercises, and detailed solutions are provided at the end of the book. A companion website features online tutorials that further explore topics including meaning analysis, argument analysis, logic, statistics, and strategic thinking, along with additional exercises and multimedia resources for continued study. An Introduction to Critical Thinking and Creativity is an excellent book for courses on critical thinking and logic at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The book also serves as a self-contained study guide for readers interested in the topics of critical thinking and creativity as a unified whole.
Critical thinking in today’s education is one of the primary goals of educational programs around the world. As a desired outcome, critical thinking allows students to be effective learners in the learning process, responsible citizens in their daily life and successful employees in the job market. Therefore, students need to be socialized to carry out research, make decisions and solve problems in the high school context before moving to university. Therefore, this book aims at intorducing a brief critical review about critical thinking and then analyzing two second year baccalaureate textbooks of English, namely Insights into English and Ticket to English to find out if they help high school students develop a degree of critical thinking.

Critical Heuristics of Social Planning has been recognised as the seminal work on critical systems thinking. Ulrich offers a new approach both to practical philosophy (which has until now remained rather unpractical) and to systems thinking (which has reduced the systems idea to a tool of merely instrumental, rather than practical, reason). Critical systems heuristics (CSH), as the approach is now generally called, provides planners, practitioners and policy makers with a conceptual tool for practising practical reason. It will enable them to identify and discuss systematically the value implications of policies, plans, problem definitions, or program evaluations. In addition, the book offers the most thorough-going introduction available today to the espistemological foundations of critical systems thinking, including a practicable model of cogent argumentation on disputed value implications of designs. A must for practitioners and scholars who are interested in a self-critical and practicable understanding of the widespread call for holistic or systems thinking! "Critical Heuristics will be recognised as a very important book in the emerging systems discipline and will hold a significant position for many years to come". Peter B. Checkland, University of Lancaster, England. "An outstanding contribution to an adequate philosophical and heuristic framework for critical social inquiry and design". C. West Churchman, University of California, Berkeley, USA."The book fills a major gap in the literature on the systems tradition". Michael C. Jackson, University of Hull, England. "Drawing on a profound knowledge of both AngloAmerican systems theory and German practical philosophy, this book belongs to the best studies I have seen on the normative foundations of planning and systems design." Horst Steinmann, University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany. "Mandatory for libraries in the field of planning". John Friedmann, University of California, Los Angeles, USA.

The book is the results of the writer’s PhD studies on the implementation of a critical genre-based approach (GBA) in teaching academic English writing to student teachers who were learning English as a foreign language in a state university in Indonesia. The model of the GBA was distinctive in that it sought to synthesise principles from other theories, such as critical thinking (CT), critical pedagogy (CP), and critical literacy (CL). The approach was also distinctive in that it sought to use a genre-based pedagogy with a community of English as a foreign language (EFL) students, whereas hitherto most uses of this pedagogy have been with native speakers or English as a second language (ESL) students. The book shows that an SFL GBA, combined with other critical dimensions could enhance students’ performance of their argumentative writing skills, CT and CL. The book can be an important source for anyone interested in implementing such a program in ESL or EFL contexts in Indonesia and other countries, with some modification adapted to each context, to improve the teaching of English and enhance the students’ critical capacity needed to create a democratic society.
The dissertation delas with existence and nonexistence results for a class of nonlinear elliptic systems which arise in looking for solitary waves in coupling the matter field with the electromagnetic field when the nonlinearity exhibits some critical behaviour; in particular this is the case of solitons which are in equilibrium with their own electromagnetic field. In the second part of the dissertation, the author develop a technique to characterize, in a variational framework, the ground state energy level of a large class of critical Hamiltonian elliptic systems.
